CLASS NEWS & Other Happenings

Class News and Other Happenings

This is a new feature I’m testing on the class website in preparation for our next reunion. It is a work in progress, so check back often. This will be the place for bits and pieces of class news that I become aware of regarding the Class of 63 that I believe should be shared with all of you. Included will be current news about our classmates; news about classmates who pass away, along with links to obituaries, if possible; news to keep you informed about Reunion committee agendas, meeting notes, and other work in progress updates. If you have any news you’d like to share with our classmates, please submit the information to me so I can publish it here.

Photos of the old OHS campus are uploaded:

Photos of the old OHS campus are posted on the website. Except for the old Bannister Gym and the classroom building next to it, the campus is now an empty field. The last news I heard is that the City of Oxnard was considering developing a park at the location.

I have uploaded some photo files showing the old OHS campus in a state of disrepair. Most were taken just prior to our 45th Reunion. You’ll also find a few candid shots of what appears to be a Slave Day and lunch period from the 50’s.

Update and redesign of the class website:

I changed the appearance of the class website by using one of my webpage design application’s templates. I also edited and updated some of the pages in the site, including a current list of fellow classmates who have passed away. This new page,“Class News and Other Happenings” is making its first appearance. I also uploaded image files depicting the condition of our old campus. The photos were taken by different people and date back to 2008. Most of the campus, except for Bannister Gymnasium and the classroom building next door to the gym, has been cleared.

Passing of John Hudnall:

Sadly, we have lost our classmate, John Hudnall, who suddenly passed away on December 3, 2016 in Woodland, CA.

Several class members contributed to a fundraiser to help with family expenses. John’s daughter, Melinda, expressed her appreciation:

Visit with Tom Ragan:

Pat Hutcheson and I drove to Oxnard to visit Tom Ragan. We had a pleasant 2 1/2 hour visit with him. Physically, he’s what you would expect for someone in his late 80’s. He does use a walker, and is hard of hearing, but he’s just as sharp as ever. Wetentatively set a date to meet for breakfast in December. (UPDATE: Unfortunately, Mr. Ragan developedpneumonia just prior to our December breakfast and had to spend a few days in the hospital. His son reported that he was doing well and is back home. We’ve postponed meeting with him until January.)

The breakfast group (see August 13, 2016 entry below for more info) met. Don Seidler attended again. We had a great time. Don was unable to contact Tom Ragan and will try locating Tom's address for Phil.

This breakfast group is open to any member of the OHS Class of ’63 and friends. If you are interested in joining us, please use the email links on this website to sent a note to Phil.

Breakfast with Don Seidler:

A group of the OHS Class of ’63 graduates meets once a month for breakfast at a local restaurant in Camarillo.

Originally, Joel Wiesner, who wanted to reconnect with members of the OHS Class of ’63, and I began meeting once a month for Saturday breakfast at a local Camarillo restaurant. He drives to Camarillo from his home in San Bernardino County.

During the past year, other classmates who live in Ventura County have joined us. Pat Hutcheson, Larry Kawata, Chester Spivey, plus my brother Tom and Larry Hawley (Class of ’64) attend as their schedules permit.

Last month, Pat contacted a former OHS teacher, Don Seidler, and extended an invitation to join us for today’s meeting. Don and his wife, Millie, both joined us. Don is still sharp as a tack. We had a good time reminiscing about our years at OHS.

Don told us to keep him informed about our future meetings and that he would definitely like to return. He also told us he would try to contact Tom Ragan and ask him to join us in the future.

This is not a closed group, so any of our classmates can join us at any time.

Our next meeting is scheduled for 9:00 am, September 10 at the “Good Morning Cafe” on Arneill Road in Camarillo (close to the Smart & Final grocery store).

The date and time are subject to change, so if you’re interested, drop me a note so we can put you on our email list.

News about a possible combined Reunion with the Class of 64:

At our post-50th Reunion meeting in 2013, our Reunion Planning Committee decided to explore the possibility of having a combined 55th Reunion with the OHS Class of ’64.

Comments from some attendees that the 50th Reunion was the “last one they would attend”; age, health, and financial reasons that make travel difficult; the passing of some classmates in the years between reunions were recognized as reasons we would see a declining number of attendees at future reunions. Having a combined reunion would help keep attendance up and costs down.

I am currently working with my brother, Tom, to help the OHS Class of ’64 rebuild their Reunion Planning Committee. After it’s reorganized, I plan to meet with it to discuss the possibility of a combined 55th Reunion of the two classes. If we agree to move forward, both committes will meet to do some pre-planning.

Check back here for updates.
